| Costco is showing the love! |
[Nov. 28th, 2009|06:45 pm] |
Costco is now featuring the ( Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series ) DVDs for $99.99 (which is less than the amazon.com price by $28). If you don't have a Costco near you, it's also free shipping until November 30. THE COMPLETE JEREMY BRETT COLLECTION!! With David Burke and a special interview with Edward Hardwicke and it includes all the movies on the 12 disks.
A little less exciting, IMO, Costco is also featuring ( Basil Rathbone in The Complete Sherlock Holmes ) DVDs for $84.99, same deal for shipping. (Would have probably shown more enthusiasm if these DVDs didn't also have Nigel Bruce as Watson *gags*)
I've never seen these at Costco before so they must be riding on the wake of the new Guy Ritchie movie. HUZZAH!!!! |

[Nov. 28th, 2009|08:11 pm] |
FALL RIVER, Mass. - A man locked his two young sons in the trunk of his car while he ran an errand, Massachusetts police said.
Fall River police allege Michael Monahan put his kids, ages 3 and 6, in the trunk of his Pontiac Trans Am for several minutes Tuesday morning while he went inside a sailing shop.
According to court records, Monahan told investigators the boys like to play in the trunk
The 35-year-old Monahan pleaded not guilty Wednesday to assault and reckless endangerment of a child. He was released on cash bail.
A broadcast from WPRI-TV showed Monahan's attorney telling a judge that his client loves his children.
The children are in the custody of their mother.

| Media references to fanfic, the week ending 11/28/09 |
[Nov. 28th, 2009|06:16 pm] |
Starting with Twilight…
In a USA Today story distributed by Gannett, Maria Puente wrote, of adult engagement with things Twilight, It's moms and grandmas standing in line at theaters, reading and rereading the books, spending big bucks on the merchandise (such as Nordstrom's Twilight-themed apparel and jewelry) and writing reams of fan fiction (17,000 stories on just one fan-fiction site alone).
( And more! )
In other news...
In a Sun Media article by published throughout Cananda, Sharon Weatherall wrote about an Ontario girl who is going to travel to Australia to meet an ailing fellow writer, thanks to the Australian Wish Foundation. Laura and Emmy became met three years ago on Fan Fiction, where participants write stories on line, then started chatting on MSN.
In the Minneapolis City Pages, Jessica Armbruster wrote a piece promoting Mulligan Stu's Do-Over Revue, "Where artsy folks will share some of the lamest train wrecks from their past." Many creative types are willing to admit that on the way to making the works that they are most proud of, there's a wake of bad art, atrocious writing, and pieces in general bad taste. This is especially true when exploring stuff from the teen and college years, be it angst-ridden poetry about vegetarianism, fan fiction from seventh grade involving characters from Scooby Doo, or a collage with hundreds of pictures of Luke Perry glue-sticked to poster board.
Finally, in the Mountain Home, Arkansas Baxter Bulletin, Deb Peterson reported the eight-year-old poet Averee Hutson has started filling a journal with fan fiction from the iCarly series.

| | Rasputina | ] | I thought this comm could use a little more Voyager love, and specifically more Janeway love! She is the ultimate HBIC in Star Trek: a brilliant scientific mind, tough as nails, always professional, and completely dedicated to the goal of getting her crew home in one piece -- without compromising Starfleet ideals. At the same time, she's witty, kind, and compassionate towards every member of her crew. I definitely consider her a role model, and to show my admiration for her, I bring you a number of photos and quotes of this amazing character!
Sample of goodies to come:

| Pear Tart |
[Nov. 28th, 2009|03:16 pm] |
Part of my contribution to this years Thanksgiving Dinner was dessert. While my chocolate mousee disappeared, my pear tart never quite got out of the kitchen. That just means more for me as far as I'm concerned. It made a lovely Saturday morning breakfast.

| I'm not inconveniencing someone! My eccentric demands are AWESOME. |
[Nov. 28th, 2009|06:14 pm] |
EDIT: OP's post screencapped for your viewing pleasure
everythingtold goes out for a meal at a restaurant. As soon as the waitress appears, she gives the waitress her demands -- bring the drink, meal, to-go boxes, and check at the same time and don't come back until then -- because "I really go out of my way to make life as easy as possible for people in customer service".
When the waitress gets annoyed with her, she points out that she's not being annoying. "I turned to the couple at the table next to me and asked if I was bothering them. They shook their heads 'no'. I asked the family at the table on the other side and asked the same thing."
Then, there's a lengthy diatribe about her theory on tipping: "servers get $3-something an hour and minimum wage is $7:30 [sic] per hour. Generally speaking, if I am going to spend an hour in a restaurant, I will be tipping $4."
Finally, after paying her check, the OP gets up for a cigarette break, leaving her music player & book behind. After her cigarette break, she's SHOCKED to discover her table has been bused!
Commentors repeatedly point out that requesting the waitress only visit your table twice -- once to take your order and once to drop everything from drink to bill off -- is very inconvenient for waitstaff, but OP doesn't care. "I guess a lot of people in here hate me for trying to make life easy, lol."
"I actually wasn't trying to come off as SpecialSnowflake/EntitlementBitch at all - just the opposite."
"I cn't [SIC] believe that many people think it's annoying to make sure server doesn't have to worry about me very much." |
